Merehead TMD

Mendip Rail LTD
East Cranmore
Shepton Mallet

The former Foster Yeoman TMD at Merehead, is on the A361, about 4 miles east of Shepton Mallet in Somerset. Restricted views of the depot can be obtained from a nearby public footpath.

From the M5, leave at junction 23, and take the A39 towards Glastonbury. After roughly 12.5 miles, at the island junction with the A361/A39, take the 3rd exit, following the A361 towards Frome. After about 15 miles, look out for the obvious entrance to the quarry. Immediately opposite, is Merehead depot.

If access to the TMD is not possible, there is an alternative vantage point. Return to the main road, and turn left. Then take the next turning to the left ( to East Cranmore ) and then first left as the road bends round to the right. Passing a school on your right, park safely along this lane, leaving plenty of room for farm traffic. Walk to the end of the lane and turn right onto the public footpath/bridleway. Walk up this track for about a quarter of a mile to look across the mere to view the railway. Binoculars required.

Vantage Points: As the depot lies quite a few hundred yards away from the road, there are no clear vantage points.

As mentioned in the 2nd paragraph above, using the public bridleway will be the only real option. Unfortunately, even from here, you will only get to see the roofs or half of the bodysides. Obviously, photographic opportunities will be limited. The below photo, is basically the view you are likely to be greeted with. ... rehead.jpg

One other option, is to return to the depot entrance on the A361. By using the intercom at the gate, it may be possible to gain entrance and have a look around. But of course, that all depends on luck !!
