The depot is between Bristol Temple Meads and Lawrence Hill stations on the main line north from Bristol. The shunter is usually parked behind the main shed, but from time to time, does move around the depot complex. From a passing train, look to the left when leaving Temple Meads.

From the M32, leave at junction 3, and take the 1st exit onto the A4320. Continue along and at the first island, take the 2nd exit. On approach to the traffic lights, get in the outside land, and turn right into Days Road. From here, the depot entrance is about 100 yards on the left.

Alternatively, from Bristol Temple Meads station approach road, turn left onto the dual-carriageway and left at the lights under the railway into Cattle Market Road. Follow this road as it becomes Feeder Road and turn left at the lights into Avon Street. Turn first right into Silverthorne Lane and follow this road as it becomes Kingsland Road. After passing under the light-controlled railway bridge, turn right into Days Road. The depot entrance is almost at the end of this road, on the right-hand side, where a reasonable amount can be seen from the security gate.

For another viewpoint, continue on foot to the end of Days Road and turn right onto the dual-carriageway to view from the bridge. Strictly speaking this bridge is No Pedestrians, but several locals seem to use this as shortcut. The shunter is usually to be seen from this viewpoint ( binoculars useful ), which also gives distant views of St Philips Marsh off to the left.

To reach St Philips Marsh from here, return to your car and turn right at the end of Days Road onto the dual-carriageway over the bridge. Turn right at the lights into Albert Road and right almost immediately into the KFC car-park. I would strongly advise about walking all the way across the bridge.

Vantage Points: To view the 08, there are two excellent opportunities, both of which could provide good photos.

The first is up on the road bridge, as mentioned in the 2nd paragraph. As the shunter doesn't tend to move around the depot very often, a decent zoom lens might be required for here. Depending on the shunters position, a cab end shot would be the most likely, although if it is parked near the dual carriageway, a full bodyside photo can be gained.

The 2nd and probably the best, is from the depot gates. As said above, the 08 doesn't move around a lot, and is sometimes parked adjacent to the entrance. Clicking on the number below, will give you an indication of what to expect.

Current Allocation:

08516 - LNWR dark and light grey, with full yellow cab ends
