The shunter at Fowey can’t easily be seen from a public place, but a boat trip up the River Fowey from the town harbour, takes you past the docks, and the shunter can usually be seen. Obviously, the boat trips will be more frequent in the tourist season, and may be few and far between in the winter.

Your best chance may be to view the shunter from the other side of the river. You will need a map for this one - and a cautious approach and steely nerve on the very narrow, twisty Cornish lanes.

From Lanreath on the B3359, take the minor road south-west towards Bodinnick and head for Mixtow - see map. However, instead of going all the way into Mixtow, as the lane bends round to the right, take the lane that goes straight on to Mixtow Pill. About 200 yards before the end of the lane, there is a small lay-by on the right hand side where it is safe to park your car. Walk down to the river, and if you can't see the shunter on the opposite bank from here, you will need to walk along the shoreline to your right until it comes into sight. Make sure you do this at low tide! You will need wellingtons or waterproof boots with a good grip because of the seaweed-covered rocks. Binoculars are recommended, and there are reasonable photo opportunities with a telephoto lens.

The shunter cannot be seen from any passing train as it is on a freight-only branch.

Vantage Points: Given the lack of vantage points here, and as the shunter could may well be hidden anyway, contacting Imerys LTD on the above address would be the best option.

Current Allocation:

As of late December 2012, shunting at Fowey is now undertaken by a mainline loco.
