Bardon Aggregates LTD
Bardon Road
LE67 1TL

Owned by Aggregates Industries, Bardon Hill has had a quarry since 1622. Situated about 2.5 miles east of Coalville, the sidings are just off the now defunct Leicester to Burton-on-Trent Ivanhoe line, which closed to passengers in 2000.

By Car - From the M1, leave at junction 22 and take the A511 towards Coalville. Pass over two islands and upon reaching a 3rd, take the 3rd exit, still following the A511. After approximately 200 yards, the rail entrance to the quarry is on your right ( level crossing ), immediately after passing the HGV entrance. One of the industrial shunters may be seen from here.

At weekends and bank holidays, a number of Freightliner 66's stable nearby. By returning to the island, take the 3rd exit into Grange Road. By looking to your right as you pass over the level crossing, the 66's can be seen from here.

By Rail - As the quarry sits on a freight only line, using public transport could prove to be difficult, time consuming and expensive. Leicester is the nearest station from Bardon Hill, this being about 11 miles away.

For details, times and routes, please follow the link below.

Notes - If visiting the quarry during the week, one of the shunters may be seen from the level crossing on Bardon Road. However, a weekend visit may prove to be a better option, as rail movements are virtually nil.

If wanting to view the class 66's, there is room to park, just after the level crossing on Grange Road. However, there is only space for one vehicle.

Vantage Points - The level crossing, mentioned above on Bardon Road, is the only public vantage point for viewing the shunters. If visiting during the weekend and want a closer look, ask at security, although you may well be refused entry.

The class 66's are easily viewable. However, some may not be idable. A pair of binoculars / zoom lens and a walk up and down the road should sort that out though.
