The sidings at Mountsorrel, once occupied by Redland, are now being used by LaFarge Aggreagates. With the site producing large amounts of cement, concrete, asphalt and plasterboard, two thirds of the aggregates leave by rail. To move the many wagons that occupy the sidings, LaFarge have their own industrial shunters, most of which are remote control. However, an occassional mainline shunter can be found, either hired in from a private owner or one from DBS. For freight times, use the Sileby timetable, available through the subsciption based Freightmaster website.

By Car - From the M1, leave at junction 23 and take the A512 towards Loughborough. At the second roundabout, turn right ( 3rd exit ) onto Epinal Way ( A6004 ). Continue for 2 miles, passing over 4 islands. Upon reaching the 5th roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto the A6 and, after 1 mile, take the 1st turning on the left. Turn right at the rounabout into Barrow Road and continue along, taking the 2nd exit at the rounabout into South Street. This continues into Sileby Road, which after approx 1 mile, the entrance to the LaFarge Works is on your left.

Alternatively, if no view of the shunter is gained from here, turn round and head back to the island. Shortly after passing over a zebra crossing, turn right into Melton Road, following the one way system and the sign for Barrow upon Soar station. When upon reaching the crossroads ( you have right of way ), ignore the station sign and proceed ahead, still following Melton Road. At the T-junction, turn right into Grove Lane and 1st left into Breachfield Road. Follow this round until you see a grassy area on your right. From here, take the public footpath into a field, turn right and continue along the track. Upon reaching the top right of the field, you will be able to see the railway from here. A well worn path has been created to a set of gates, which was previously used to cross the mainline. If present, the shunter may be seen, obviously all depending on whether any wagons are blocking its view.

By Rail - From Barrow upon Soar station, turn left on the exit and 1st right into Breachfield Road. Take the public footpath on your right, situated immediately after house number 58. Then proceed as above. Walking Time - approx 15 mins.

Notes - Although showing on the many online and A-Z maps, don't be tempted to try the bridal path on Sileby Road. On road parking is virtually impossible, as you will most likely to be blocking somebody's drive. Also, due to the closure of the mainline pedestrian crossing, steel fencing has been erected, blocking any decent view of the sidings. And due to the position of where the shunter may be stabled, the angle from here is awful.

If using the field option, it is best to follow the track. Please don't be tempted to use a short cut and cross the field. This has many hidden ruts and holes, which could cause problems under foot, as well as damaging any equipment you are carrying if you fall over !

Vantage Points - A passing train would be the best option, as the shunter could be stabled in any of the sidings. The now defunct crossing on the field side of the mainline, gives you excellent views of some of the sidings, as well as approaching trains. This is a good area for photography and filming, as both north and south views are open. If using the train option, then a Barrow upon Soar to Sileby service would suffice, with a return ticket costing about £1.90.
