The former goods depot, situated adajacent to the Stoke to Crewe and Manchester line, is now leased to Electro Motive Diesel ( EMD ). The American company undertake modifications and small repairs to some of the class 66's, mainly for the DRS, Freightliner and the now defunct Fastline / Jarvis PLC fleet.

By Car - From the M6 south, leave at junction 16, taking the A500 towards Stoke on Trent. Follow for approx 6 miles and at the 4th slipway junction ( signposted for the A527 and Tunstall ) take the exit. At the island, take the 2nd exit onto the A527 Porthill Road and on the approch to the canal bridge, take the 2nd left into Longshaw Street. The gates to the EMD depot are situated at the end of this road.

Alternatively, when you come of the A500, take the first exit into Longbridge Hayes Road. Shortly after passing the redundant sidings, you will come upon a footbridge. At this point, park up, and a front end view of the depot can be seen from here.

By Rail - By alighting at Longport station, the above mentioned footbridge is roughly a 5 minute walk away. Trains from Crewe and Manchester don't stop at the station very often these days, so you may have to go directly to Stoke, before doubling back on yourself. Services run about every hour during the week, with a return ticket costing about £2.30.

Notes - It is highly unlikely, that you will see anything from the depot gates, as the shunter and any locos ( if present ), will most likely be inside the shed. Parking by the footbridge is no problem, but if visiting during the week, please be aware of the amount of HGV's that use the industrial estate.

In December 2015, the staff became very aggressive to a visiting enthusiast, despite the depot being viewed via a public vantage point. If the situation arises again, please don't let them be intimidating, as you are doing nothing wrong. If you wish, advise the staff that you may call the police if you feel threatened.

Vantage Points - The above mentioned footbridge is the only really vantage point, as this gives you an head on view of the shed. If the doors are open, then with binoculars, you may well be able to see inside. When the shunter or any visiting locos makes an appearance, the footbridge also gives you good photographic opportunities.
