Handling approximately 900,000 tonnes of coal per year, the coal preparation plant ( washery ) at Onllwyn was constructed in 1998 and is located about 18 miles north of Neath. Situated at the end of a freight only line, the majority of the processed coal goes to Aberthaw Power Station ( 500-600 tonnes ), with the rest distributed to the industrial market, domestic customers and for export. With the washery seeing about 8 trains a week, 700,000 tonnes leave by rail per year.

By Car - From junction 43 on the M4, follow the A465 for Neath. After 4 miles, take the A4109 and then the 3rd exit at the roundabout, following the signs for Seven Sisters. Continue along for 8 miles and after negotiating a sharp right and two sharp left hand bends, carry on for just under 2 miles. Then turn left into Onllwyn Road, which is signposted for Coalbren. Immediately after passing over the railway, park up on the left and the shunter can be seen from across the fields.

By Rail - As the washery is situated at the end of a freight only branch, a bus or a taxi will be the only option if arriving in Wales by train. Neath is the closest station, and for times and details, following the link below.

Notes - As the shunter doesn't tend to move very far, it is easily viewable from across the fields. However, to identify it clearly, a pair of binoculars or zoom lens will be required.

Parking is easy on the road, as there is a large lay-by on the bend, situated just after passing over the railway. However, there are no footpaths along the road, just a small grass verge.

Vantage Points - Just the one vantage point which is the road, and as the shunter doesn't move very far, this is sufficent.

Current Allocation:

From January 2017, a shunter was no longer required at the washery.
